We're using the site again to make thing easier. Much better than writing an increasingly long and detailed email. So here's what you need to know.
What's Different This Year?
Well, lots. For one, Simchat Torah is a weightier day than it used to be. To that end, we will once again be running this BBQ as a fundraiser, with all donations to the BBQ being split between Ohr Saadya and Latet, which helps people with food insecurity in Israel. While we are all enjoying two days of endless food, nearly a third of Israelis suffer from hunger, up from 24.9% last year. I'm only asking $36 per family, but feel free to donate more. These are very worthy causes. All food, drinks and service is covered, so 100% of your donation goes to charity.
Where Is It?
It'll be at Ohr Saadya.
That's 554 Queen Anne Rd
Not my backyard this year. If you go to my backyard, there will be no food there. There's a beautiful new Sukkah in my pergola, but it has no food in it.
It'll happen, rain or shine. If it's nice outside, we'll hang out outside in the shul backyard. If it's raining, we'll hang out inside (unless you want to keep me company by the grill).
You can still just follow the smells of BBQ, the sounds of lightly-drunk people and the sight of beautiful landscaping and lots of lights.
When Is It?
It's not called the Simchat Torah BBQ for nothing. It'll be Tuesday night, October 14th, about 45 minutes after Hakafot. It will probably start at 8:15.
If you come early, you might have to help, but you'll get the best food.
It goes pretty late, so show up whenever. Most years we go until midnight (or until the propane runs out).
Who's Invited?
Everyone. Tell your friends. As many people as the shul and the shul backyard can fit.
With the site (and our new great WhatsApp group), no need to remember emails, so spread the word. No one is not invited.
Except kids. No kids. Get your babysitters now. This is an adults event.
What's Being Served?
All the classics: Cowboy burgers, hot dogs (Ables & Hyman, to keep one person happy), Salami, Steaks, Sausages, Kebabs, Chicken, Toppings, Salads, Snacks, Beer. There will be GF and vegan options as well.
The New Stuff: So many sliders (garlic-crusted, pastrami, pepper-crusted, boring/regular), kielbasas, duck sausage.
The Contest: Awesomesauce --We never actually had this contest, I don't think, so let's do it this year. A head-to-head competition to see who makes the best burger/sausage sauce. Winner gets an engraved silver spoon trophy and bragging rights. Special judge panel to be revealed shortly. Text me to compete.
Cost
It's free! Yay!
But you should donate $36 to the shul/Leket if you're going. You'll definitely eat at least that much. You can donate at https://www.ohrsaadya.org/form/Simchat-Torah-BBQ-2025.html
